Congregational Catholics

Cardinal Reinhard Marx and fellow bishops from Germany meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, Nov. 17, 2022 | Vatican Media. Source: CNA

At the Collation & Installation of the new Dean of Llandaff, the Rev Canon Richard Peers, the retiring bishop, June Osbourne, repeated the claim that "the Church in Wales is part of the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church", a claim rejected by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches following the unilateral action of some Anglicans to ordain women to the priesthood.

The bishop invited the Dean-designate to make the following declaration:

"I do solemnly declare my belief in the Faith which is revealed in Holy Scripture and set forth in
the Catholic Creeds and to which the historic formularies, namely the Thirty-nine Articles of
Religion, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests, and Deacons as
published in 1662, bear witness; and in public prayer and the administration of the Sacraments,
I will use only those forms of service which are allowed by lawful authority, and none other. And
I hereby undertake to be bound by the Constitution of the Church in Wales, and to accept,
submit to, and carry out any sentence or judgement which may at any time be passed upon me
by the Archbishop, a Diocesan Bishop or any Court or the Tribunal of the Church in Wales."

Somewhat removed from the faith of one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, the Dean of Llandaff is in a same sex relationship living openly with his partner. The campaigning bishop of Monmouth is also living openly with her partner in a same sex relationship while the Archbishop of Wales is a re-married divorcee.

How can this be?

Anglican beliefs allow local discretion under The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral :

1. The Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the revealed Word of God.
2. The Nicene Creed as the sufficient statement of the Christian Faith.
3. The two Sacraments,–Baptism and the Supper of the Lord,–ministered with unfailing use of Christ’s words of institution and of the elements ordained by Him.
4. The Historic Episcopate, locally adapted in the methods of its administration to the varying needs of the nations and peoples called of God into the unity of His Church.

'Locally adapted' opens a can of worms. The liberal agenda took hold in the Episcopal Church of the United States (ECUSA, now TEC). In 2003 Anglican provinces declare 'impaired' or 'broken' relationship with ECUSA following the consecration of Gene Robinson, the first openly gay priest to be consecrated a bishop in a major Christian denomination, as bishop of New Hampshire.

Within a generation liberal revisionists have taken control of many Anglican provinces. The Church in Wales has become a joke among orthodox Anglicans and the wider Christian fellowship. The Church of England teeters on the edge of disaster as bishops push their latest deception, Living in Love and Faith.

Liberal provinces face extinction while Anglicanism elsewhere thrives. In the USA, Alarm Bells as Episcopal Church Decline Accelerates but nothing deters the revisionists. If at first they don't succeed they try, try and try again until they have their own way.

For those Anglicans who swam the Tiber the same ominous signs are appearing as German bishops meet with Pope Francis amid concern over Synodal Way

The president of the German Bishops’ Conference, Bishop Georg Bätzing, said he will not deny blessings for same-sex couples.

The Synodal Way "is a controversial discussion process underway in Germany with the declared aim of addressing the Church’s clerical sexual abuse crisis by debating and passing resolutions on whether, or how, Catholicism needs to change (“develop”) its teaching – and the Catholic Church therefore change its approach – to questions of sexuality and the exercise of power, including doctrine and the sacraments."

The Church of England Synod voted to ordain women to the priesthood and to the episcopate. The Governing Body of the Church in Wales followed suit. The Church of England is seeking to emulate the Church in Wales, blessing same sex partnerships as a precursor to same sex marriage in Church. Disaster looms closer.

Faith by committee is not the faith of the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Ultimately it has led to Jesus being depicted as a "rosy-cheeked Christ with breasts, beard and make-up jumping in front of a rainbow".

As Tony Barber wrote in the Financial Times yesterday, "The American priest and author Andrew Greeley once said: “The opposite of Catholic is not Protestant. The opposite of Catholic is sectarian.” But just as secular politics in western countries is a battleground between mutually suspicious conservatives and liberals, so Greeley’s appeal to respect differences of religious opinion is drowning in a doctrinal struggle for control of the Roman Catholic Church."

  1. My dear AB.

First thread of your newly posted 'congregational catholics' read well and raised more questions about choice of senior clergy in an already out of control Church-in-Wales which, unable to retain its 'established' congregant-base and 'traditional' clergy thinks the way forward is to go-Catholic - or Gay. All much agreed by the majority of us.

But why muddy the waters by introducing the 'Novus Ordo' Roman Catholic Bishop of Limburg, Germany (Georg Batzing) and his most peculiar theologies and writings. He is already widely ridiculed in Germany (read the esteemed Bunte magazine article March 2022) and left to the Vatican, if he were also head of the Banco Ambrossiano Vatican Bank, he'd be hanging under Blackfrier's Bridge, London. He is denounced left, right and centre.

Bunte magazine - favoured reading of all Germans, Catholic and Lutheran - wrote: "No catholic bone in his body in the Land of Luther makes Batzing fit for the job".

Introducing this nunce into AncientBriton discussion is akin to suggesting that the Rev'd Dr. Iain Paisley's 'Pontificals' on Peace and Reconcilliation with Rome would be taken seriously.

AncientBritain is respected by its readers/bloggers because it has for years been rational. Can't understand why you therefore dug deeply into Google to find a nutter of a Bishop in Germany to try and strengthen an already on-side consensus to the overall theme.

His opinions on the subject are irrelevant and indeed, to Germans he too is irrelevant.

To bloggers tempted to reply: read up on Germany's reaction of Bishop Batzing first! He's totally shunned and his voice ridiculed. Ditto on this website I hope.

  3. Agreed entirely 1662. But once she's gone let's not have years and years of AB blogger whingeing and retrospective call-outs of her name as with Barry Morgan is all to blame etc. etc. etc. Let's all focus on who might next be the Wrecker of Llandaff or, if there's a good choice, respect him/her. God forbid that the decision-takers opt for the buffoon ++Andrew John to translate from Bangor .. much as we here in North Wales would love to see the back of him.

      'respect him/her'?

The presupposition there is: sex is irrelevant for the priesthood.

If sex is irrelevant, then so must be sexual orientation (heterosexuality and homosexuality).

If that be the case, then to be transgendered must be irrelevant too.

  7. The church has been seriously flawed and finances depleted by its obsession with LGBT issues. The strident 'out' gay brigade has found a home in the Church. It has used the Christian imperative to love and care to find favour there for anything it says or demands. It knows full well that the Church cannot effectively oppose them.

In effect, LGBT candidates have made a utility of the Church for their own ends.

We need only look at Monmouth, Llandaff and St Davids, and at the paucity of leadership at the top in the form of the ABWales to see LGBT achievements.

One could ask what more they want as the flag-waving continues unabated.

Loathed as I am to prolong or extend the AB Blog LGBTQ-XYZ debate month after month (I think 99.9% of us are in agreement on this one and comments are now so, so, repetitive) but do look beyond Llandaff. Focus also on the archbishop's 'seat' of Bangor where at almost every twist and turn ++Andrew will appoint 'gays' to parishes from his day one, appointing the Lavatory Lingerer of Lampeter to archdeacon right through to present. This to include salaried lay such as the live-together cathedral director of music and his/her something-or-other. Of the 40+ clergy who have quit the Diocese of Bangor since the kilt-favouring 'Andy' was enthroned I have a feeling that without exception, all were 'straight' hetrosexuals. The Gays filled their seats. So to 'UtterNonsense' and others who ask 'Cabal - what Cabal? check it out.

    1. I'm afraid I can't agree with that. The vast majority of the population have never even heard of the folk whose names keep popping up on this site and simply have no interest in religion. Your comment also, to me, seems to forget that the CinW is by no means the entire extent of "The Church" in Wales which includes many more denominations and also independent groups. I do think (and I've said it before) that the widely-reported sexual and financial scandals which have rocked the churches in recent years have undermined trust in Christianity as a whole; I also think that the endless concentration by many churches on matters of theology and praxis have severely impacted on their time and energy to look outwards instead of inwards.

Although they make sad reading, I actually welcome the census figures. To me they show that people are thinking about how they fill in the forms and not making the blithe assumption that "I'm British, therefore I'm a Christian". Indeed it's been said that these are the hardest people to evangelise because any attempt to engage them in conversation evokes a response such as, "Oh, I don't really believe in all that God rubbish, and I never go to church - but I try to obey the Golden Rule and so I'm a Christian". I suspect that the proportion of "active" Muslims or Hindus (etc) among those who have so described themselves is far higher than the proportion of "active" Christians - although even in those communities there can be a genuine confusion between "ethnic" and "religious" identity.

If homosexual 'marriage' is the moral equivalent of opposite sex marriage, then:

    1. How is a homosexual 'marriage' consumated?

    2. How does one party to a homosexual 'marriage' commit adultery?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Love and fidelity are what consummate a marriage. It’s quite medieval to reduce consummation to physical intercourse to the neglect of mutual love and the intimate sharing of lives.

Adultery is allowing another relationship to detract from the person you have committed to share your life with. Again, it’s too simple to reduce that to sex - some of the most adulterous relationships could well be non sexual if we are not careful.

'Love and fidelity are what consumate a marriage.'

    1. English and Welsh law does not recognise the consumation of a homosexual 'marriage.'

    Bang goes moral equivalence!

    2. The legal definition of adultery was clarified by the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, to confirm that adultery can only be committed between people of the opposite sex.

Therefore, a party to a homosexual 'marriage' would need to commit adultery with someone of the opposite sex.

Bang goes the bald assertion 'We were born homosexual'!

    Bang goes moral equivalence.

    1. Furthermore, even if the national churches permit homosexual 'marriage', the parties to such marriages will never achieve equality.

      Homosexual 'marriages' are sterile.

They can only acquire babies through contractual means: the selling and buying of babies: slavery.

Here a little, there a little: sin committed in defence of sin.

Violence will be the eventual result; for there is no other way, ultimately, to defend the lie.

      It is written:

For there is no truth in their mouth; their inmost self is destruction; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue.
