That was the Church that was, it's over, let it go?

A new order? The bishop of Monmouth at Sacred Synod in 2020 with her civil partner                                            Source:Twitter

Older readers may recall the 1960s BBC TV satirical programme That Was the Week That Was which opened with Millicent Martin singing "That was the week that was, It's over, let it go ..."

Similar feelings have been expressed for the Church in Wales. It's over, let it go. But it is hard to do so while watching self-serving groups use the Church to advance their own particular agendas at the expense of loyal Anglicans who have been shut out.

Revd Stella Bailey, the new Archdeacon of the Gwent
Valleys and Director of Mission.          Source: C in W
Monmouth news has a message from the newly appointed Archdeacon of the Gwent Valleys and Diocesan Director of Mission, the Revd Stella Bailey: "I am passionate about shaping the church to enable it to preach the gospel afresh for this generation...I keep up to date with emerging social needs and seek ways that I can creatively respond. Sometimes this involves giving a voice to those who are voiceless, acting as an advocate or using my platform to highlight the issue and help bring about change. I teach about the issues of injustice, prejudice and unconscious bias so that the church can be more Christ like in its appearance."

Stella will be moving to the diocese of Monmouth from England with her partner Karen and their two dogs, Lyra and Stewie.

It cannot be a coincidence that the new archdeacon's bishop is also a lesbian living in a civil partnership with her same sex partner. The bishop of Monmouth, Cherry Vann, is Patron of the campaigning Open Table Network (OTN). Along with her sister bishops in Llandaff and St Davids, they preach the gospel 'afresh' to promote secular causes.

An unpublished comment put it this way: "Not sure I fully agree with this, the incoming archdeacon of the valleys has no prior knowledge of the area, the people, the problems let alone the machinations of CiW. But she has one common factor with +newport they both have female partners. A case of like picks like rather than the best suited person. With such people running the church it deserves to be terminated."

There is nothing 'Christ like' about complaining of alleged "injustice, prejudice and unconscious bias" to advance the LGBTQIA+ cause at the expense of other Anglicans who follow traditional Christian teaching in common with the vast majority of Anglicans and other Christians.

Sadly such tactics are not only accepted but are championed by the bench of bishops who are pushing forward their same sex relationship policies whether pew sitters agree or not.

According to a recent Church Times article Ten years on, Harries review has changed the Church in Wales, the Review found "warm, friendly and welcoming communities", not the injustice, prejudice and unconscious bias alleged. But it also found that the Church in Wales was in crisis which led to replacing the universally recognised parish system with unpopular ministry areas.

That policy has been pursued by Church in Wales bishops with gusto while ignoring the recommended reduction in the number of diocesan bishops and restructuring of diocesan administrative areas.

Instead senior staff levels have increased with an un-elected assistant bishop who will, reportedly, join the diocesan bishops on the bench, some of whom are also unelected to this self perpetuating coterie.

It is over but hard to let go.

    1. Why?… does being related to someone who had done wrong make them a bad person? Yikes. I need to re-visit scripture.

  3. A recent survey in the Church of England proved that 'pew-sitters' as you put it, overwhelmingly support same-sex marriage. And why wouldn't they? The same will be true of the Church in Wales. You rarely meet anyone attending church who is prejudiced towards LGBTQI+ people.

    1. Incorrect PewSitter. Presumably you did not read my previous entry https://ancientbritonpetros.blogspot.com/2022/03/cofe-same-sex-marriage-fake-news.html
I agree with your view that 'you rarely meet anyone attending church who is prejudiced towards LGBTQI+ people' which is at odds with the constant claims from LGBTQI+ people of being unwelcome.
However, those of us who believe that marriage is the union of one man and one woman are frequently accused of prejudice and homophobia. That does not mean that we are.

    2. You're dishonest about this - your blog is consistently anti anything vaguely positive about LGBTQ+ people. You have been from the very start. You're obsessed with the issue.

    3. You couldn't be more wrong Pewsitter.
This blog and the vast majority of its contributors are not anti LGBTQIA in general, but are against the hostile takeover and destruction of their Church by a nasty militant LGBTQIA cabal intent on queer theology superseding the word of God as handed down for over two millennia.
The only prejudice I have seen and experienced has been that directed at anyone who challenges the queer theology and the hostile takeover, aided and abetted by cowardly and deviant virtue-signalling politically correct bullying deceitful clergy and Bishops.
The obsessed are those who insist on draping rainbow flags over altars at every possible opportunity.
Lesbian Priestesses, Archdeaconesse and Bishopesses are only helping speed up the inevitable coming implosion.

Pewsitter, if you believe that homosexual relationships are not sinful and don't fly in the face of the Bible and two thousand years of church teachings then the only conclusion is that you don't believe in sin.
Therefore this blog cannot be sinful and being "homiphobic" can be no more or less sinful than being "traditionophobic".
You can't have it both ways.

    7. Referring to the photograph at the head of this thread, is it usual for the Cult in Wales to release copies of all the plank sitters with their sexual partners in such "team" photos?

I can't recall ever seeing any similar photos released that included Mr June Osborne, Mr Joanna Penberthy, Mrs John Davies, Mrs Gregory Cameron or either of the Mrs' Andy John.

Is it only the homosexual partners that get to be included?

  4. The problem with claiming to tackle "injustice, prejudice and unconscious bias" is how you decide which things come under that heading. Everyone's views would differ massively. As we dump Scripture, my religion is shaped by what I like and don't like. And that isn't worth getting out of bed on a Sunday morning for.......

  5. You never know, the Rev Stella Bailey might bring with her and instill into the C-in-W some of the high values of her former employment such as 'Professional Standards' intolerances against general misconduct and instant sackings for gross misconduct, ethos of rewarding good performance and demoting the inept. She was, after all, a police officer; a 'Bobby' or should that be a 'Bobette'. Maybe an early secondment from Monmouth to Llandaff to use her copper's nose and sniff the Accounts.

  7. From the Church Times:
A PRIEST in the Church in Wales has been cleared of assaulting her former partner. The Priest-in-Charge of the Benefice of Dan Yr Epynt, in Swansea & Brecon diocese, the Revd Michelle Bailey, aged 54, had been charged with the assault of her then partner, Diane Shore, aged 56, in Ms Shore’s home in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, on 23 May 2020. At the conclusion of the case in North Staffordshire Justice Centre, last Friday, the chairman of the Bench, Marcus White, said: “Miss Bailey acted out of self-defence. She is to be acquitted of the assault charge.”

So, "It cannot be a coincidence that the new archdeacon's bishop is also a lesbian living in a civil partnership with her same sex partner". While there may possibly be some truth in your assertion, it's not actually an assumption you can make. In fact you could have said the same thing, if both the bishop and incoming Archdeacon had been male and married to their respective female wives!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Actually, with LBG folk making up only 1½% of people (see the census returns) that makes a probability of both bishop and appointed newbie being lesbians purely by chance of less than 1 in 4000

    2. Except we're not discussing the general population but the clerics of the cult in Wales and the church of England, in which it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the proportion of LGBTQIA+-&*@#^%$£ types are anything between 50% and 90%.

    3. You make an excellent point Enoch.
In common with just about every other organisation I can think of, does the Cult in Wales carry out "diversity monitoring" of its staff and clergy?
If so, with what results (and are they published) and, if not, why not?
It would be very interesting to know how close your estimate of between 50% and 90% might be.
Whatever the exact figure might be, it's a dead certainty to be many many times more than 1.5% and would confirm the suspicion that LGBTQIA people are massively over-represented in the Cult in Wales.

I didn't express any opinion on that. I was merely pointing out that it indeed could be coincidence that +Cherry and the new Archdeacon are both in same-sex relationships; he almost implies that the Archdeacon was largely chosen because of her relational status, which the Bishop wants to promote.

  11. I've noticed that the most recent jobs, both clerical and non-clerical, advertised by the Diocese of Llandaff, all state that the Diocesan Office is "currently" located near Bridgend".
Does this mean it might be moving in the near future, or perhaps being combined with Monmouth as per the Harries' Report?
    Pointy hats...

    ReplyDelete
  12. That the Diocesan Office of Llandaff is 'currently' located near Bridgend is probably more to do with the very excellent £££ car mileage allowances - way above those of the private sector - which the CinW/RB have approved for themselves from diminishing Parish Pot funds. Likewise, have you noticed, how the shortage of priests in diocese such as Bangor work wonderfully for those retired clergy who are tripping over each other to fill the Sunday slots. Bangor Cathedral has seen more of now retired Rev. Canon Angela Williams processing at almost every available service than when she was Canon at the same cathedral. Not a bad income to supplement already excellent clergy pension. But the extra car allowance between Cardiff to Bridgend is God-sent !!!

  13. Once ex-copper the Ven. Bailey is done with sussing the Llandaff accounts (Ad Clerum observation), she can move up to Bangor and use her police skills to investigate that other serious offence: "Impersonating an Archbishop with intent to deceive ..."

  18. If they want to challenge injustice then perhaps start looking in your own backyard. There is no justice currently in the diocese of st. David's, nor will there be, until the desire to speak truth to power is also allowed within our own walls. St. David's pew sitter.

  19. Joanna is meeting clergy and lay people to explain her position, and to show she is a nice person really. Participants should ask her at the beginning: What difference will what I say make to your future behaviour? If I have to be highly critical of you, will you resign?
    Otherwise, what's the point?
I learn that some lay persons are refusing to attend such meetings, which they regard as a waste of time.

    2. The purpose of the meeting is an opportunity for her "to explain herself", not an opportunity for her to pin her ears back and listen to others opinions of her and her misconduct much less take any notice of what they might have to say!
If she was capable of listening to others she'd have resigned months ago and before she took several months off from work (on full pay no doubt) to reflect, reconsider and recuperate.

  20. If it is indeed the case that these meetings are for her to 'explain herself' then she truly is tone-deaf to the hurt and dismay of the people in St David's. She should be listening not talking. Unless she thinks that people has misunderstood the plain meaning of her tweets? As if one had several months to read them all there were that many of course.

Feminists love their term, 'mansplaining' - sounds like a discredited bishop's version of that to me. 'I didn't really mean all tories were horrible people. honest guv.' What gets me is the great diocese of St David's will have to endure a fatally damaged episcopacy for another decade when the church can ill-afford it. A good leader would see the writing on the wall and call it a day.

Whatever the circumstances, she was actually elected bishop and broke the glass ceiling. In that she had achieved a lot. She has earned a doctoral degree and can rightly look back at some success. Having said that her behaviour in 'Tweegate' was scandalous and should've been referred to the disciplinary tribunal by the then senior Bishop (I know let's promote him to ++!).

She must know her position is severely diminished and I suspect she will conclude that herself and seek a face-saving way out. Sooner rather than later, for the sake of the great See of St David's.

  22. I had to Google-research 'Rob/Anon' reference to Savonarola to appreciate his contribution (18 March). Girolamo Savonarola (15th Cent) might already be among us. Has anyone else noticed just how astonishingly close his portraits resemble one other Vatican cohort, the Rev sub-Dean Sion ap-Rhys of Bangor??? Its uncanny. Difference is the original Savonarola was executed for speaking out against the pomp, corruption, etc. of Rome whereas his look-alike seems to be close to Sainthood moving his cathedral closer to the Vatican.

The Sub-Dean (affectionately know as Freddy Kreuger in these parts) is proving the selectors' right when they decisively recommended that he should not be allowed to train for ordaintion. Lacking in pastoral empathy, too concerned with his own status, an unhealthy obsession with the external trappings of ministry and not enough awareness of the needs of those he is called to serve, a tendency to deal with people high-handedly and at arms length, I could go on...

Of course, this is just another of many examples of Andy Crap's completely failure as a judge of character and, in this case, it could prove to be very dangerous: for him, for Freddy and for the Church as a whole. Bangor has lost far too many able, gifted, insightful clergy over the past decade an a half, while Andy Crap invested in the dross and the downright poisonous (any news from Liverpool these days?). One of the early escapees has, after a distinguished incumbency in a major parish, just been appointed Canon Chancellor at June Osborne's old stomping ground. He could be good for a few stories once he gets settled in...
