How bad must it get for a bishop to resign?

No economy at the top: "Bishop Mary and Bishop John join the Church's Bench of Bishops"                                                                    Source: Church in Wales

The Vicar of Radyr has announced that she has submitted her resignation as incumbent and Ministry Area Leader to the bishop of Llandaff.

The Reverend Vicki Burrows said that she could no longer, with integrity, knowing the many things she knows, serve in the diocese where she believed a 'culture of fear' exists. A diocesan survey conducted after her initial exposure 'brought up the same results'. The senior leadership team acknowledged there was room for improvement. See the vicar's statement in this video link  starting at position 1.00.15

The problem for the vicar and those for whom she is sacrificing her ministry is that the bench ditched integrity as soon as they had their own way on the ordination of women. See Brood of vipers!

It is not expected that the bishop of Llandaff will consider her position having already been engaged in a long running battle with her side-lined Dean and the new archbishop confirming his impotency in such matters.

Bishop June also has the precedent of the bishop of St Davids sitting tight until the storm blows over after the Twitter scandal in which she insulted many of her flock. Bishop Joanna is now making more frequent appearances as if she had never blotted her copybook.

Vicars are expendable it seems while bishops expand their empires despite Recommendation XXV for diocesan reform in the 2012 Harries Review.

Instead we have feminist triumphalism praising their latest 'successes'. Recently the Church in Wales tweeted: Our new bishops, Mary Stallard and John Lomas, join the Bench of bishops. We now have more women bishops than men, which we think is a first in the Anglican Communion @AnglicanNews @ChurchTimes.

This is somewhat ambiguous. Presumably they mean joining the bench for a photograph. According to the constitution the “Bench of Bishops” means the Archbishop and the other Diocesan Bishops but the gloating "We now have more women bishops than men, which we think is a first in the Anglican Communion" implies the prospect of an expectation of feminism influencing the Church in Wales even more.

It has been said that the hat makes the man so perhaps the mitre may be thought to make the women. That could explain the biggest mitre being sported by the assistant bishop. If I remember correctly she saw a woman wearing a mitre on a visit to the USA and was even more convinced that women bishops were right!

Postscript [01.04.2022]

Church TimesDean’s complaint of bullying by Bishop of Llandaff to be heard at tribunal:

"No date for the tribunal has yet been fixed. A spokeswoman for the Church in Wales confirmed on Tuesday that the tribunal panel was currently being appointed by the president, Mark Powell QC. It can have five members, and must include a diocesan or assistant bishop from another diocese.

"The Church in Wales has appointed Gavin Foster QC — joint registrar in the diocese of Salisbury, a former Crown Prosecutor, and former domestic chaplain to the Bishop of Winchester, Dr Tim Dakin — as Proctor to bring the case. The tribunal has considerable powers, ranging from absolute or conditional discharge, rebuke, or monition, to deposition from Holy Orders."

      Yes I must catch-up.
The juxtaposition of these two incompetents on the Green is unfortunate.
The support VB has for the D is most to do with her shared dislike of the bully next door, not his endorsement (there are limits...)

    8. When one is independently wealthy and doesn't need either the Church house or the stipend, it is easy to call out perceived injustices, then walk away at a time of one's own choosing and convenience.
Vicki Burrows would have been far more credible if she'd stood her ground against the big bullying neighbour and attempted to rectify the wrongs about which she claims to know so much.

      Ukrainian she clearly is not.

  6. Anglican Bishops have been wearing mitres since Edward King of Lincoln at the very beginning of the 20th century, Lang Archbishop of Canterbury in the 1940s, so its hardly new. Throughout history Anglican Bishops have mitres on their coats of arms since most are directly those of the pre-reformation sees and even if they didn't wear eucharistic vestments only choir robes legend has it they had them painted on the carriage doors in the 18th century. As for the bench today, just choose one that fits and is in relative proportion to the height of the wearer and don't be like Cardinal Marty, the Archbishop of Paris in the 1980s who was "a little dut" but who wore the tallest mitre in Christendom otherwise the congregation couldn't see him in procession in Notre Dame

From the comments in this morning's Church Times, I understand the safeguarding people are taking a keen interest in Vicki B's dossier of evidence. They have the power to do what Andy Crap is frightened to do. If June Osborne represents a safeguarding risk in their view, she will have no option but to stand aside. The legal (and financial) fallout of her not doing so will be reputationally disastrous.

As a number of people have said (here and elsewhere) there are very good reasons why June Osborne was not appointed a bishop in the Church of England - and even better reasons why Peggy Jackson was never made an archdeacon, despite applying for every vaccancy going. Her cat-skinning email is just one indicator of her unsuitability for senior office.

In 14 months and 7 days June Osborne will have resigned the See of Llandaff.

'She allegedly bit her fiancée, tore her ear, punched her in the face and broke her glasses in a row during the first Covid lockdown after their relationship had “turned sour”, a court was told.
The Rev Michelle Bailey, 54, has been accused of assaulting Diane Shaw, 56, during an argument in May 2020.
Bailey, who has been suspended from her role as priest-in-charge of the benefice of Dan Yr Epynt in the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon since the incident, has denied the charge of assault by beating and criminal damage and is standing trial at Stafford magistrates’ court.'
[I laughed out loud at this: Simon Dyke, for the prosecution]
'Shaw alleged: “[Bailey] went over to my car and keyed the bonnet of my car. She punched me a few times in the hallway. Full blows hit my face. I went over to her and she was lying over the bonnet of my Audi TT...I was punched in the face numerous times, forcefully, between four and six times...“I got two black eyes, split nose. My right ear became detached from my head, bite marks too and bruises to my torso.'
      The trial continues.

  10. PP. I just read the times article it's absolutely horrific. A couple of points stand out: £40k stipend is that possible? The women was married prior to her lesbian dalliance. How does such a women get through selection, surely they us psychometric profiling, behavioural analysis as most Churches do these days? John Lomas has a task ahead on this one!

I don't believe it's "all" women clergy, some let's face it are good pastoral stewards. You could equally cite male clergy too who have "gone off the rails", mainly for non-violent crimes.
Admittedly, some women are on power trips, heavy handed and more, you could cite the Llandaff saga as an example. Or, the demise of the Dean at Bangor, which finally has a Cathedral that's open, welcoming and not so toxic

On a more sober note, setting aside the Llandaff chaos. Notice one other women leaders role alongside +JunO, Peggy, who was equally toxic causing as noted across this blog, much devicive means "their is more ways to skin a cat", the failed GB proposal, Choir disbanding and organ fund The +Jo tweeting scandal, bad as it was, was prove true only a few weeks on, but, Jo's actions were unbecoming for a bishop, but ++Andy, seems to feel cutting a little slack can help or, can it?

The Bishop of Monmouth, I can say from personal experience, is certainly hands on pastorally, with her people. She has to date caused no turbulence in CiW. One in three diocesans' is a fare ratio.
On the whole this press report and court case, only sets back the cause of women in the Church.

The CiW need to have annual appraisal for all clergy, and for Bishops some form of psychological testing, physical medical fitness for such a demanding role. Failing either, means leaving office. But, these tests carried out by specialists who are not personally chosen but chosen from a pool of professionals, who have no personal gain.

If you really want to help your own Church specifically then make sure all your donations are made for a specific project or purpose, obvious examples being a roof fund, the heating bill, the Sunday school or Choir and so on.
In that way, your donations will have to be recorded as "restricted" funds and used accordingly rather than just disappearing into the general funds to pay the Parish share to the Diocese.
Keep your own Church running but simultaneously starve the Diocese and Cult in Wales of money.
Otherwise they'll get their grubby mitts on your money in any case, just like Bonaparte and Captain Peacock did in Llandaff Cathedral over the £1.5 million raised to pay for the £980k organ.
