From the Guardian: "It’s a job that comes with a range of uniform options...The retailer’s women’s black jumper with the word 'Believe” emblazoned in bold colours is a hit with female priests, leading one Church of England bishop to describe it as “the new clergy uniform'...
"Rev Kate Bottley, the former Gogglebox star and a priest in Nottinghamshire, also posted a picture using the hashtag #TeamBelieve. 'Never one to shy away from a bandwagon, like most of the clerics I know I’ve bought this jumper,' she wrote."
But believe what?
More or less whatever they like these days. The creeds have become something to recite in religious rituals. Clergy believe what they want influencing laity to do the same.
In the Church in Wales "the Bishop of St Asaph is among four senior religious leaders and Parliamentarians recognised for their 'ground-breaking work' in the area of sexuality, gender identity.
"The Rt Revd Gregory Cameron received an award for his leadership within the Church in Wales in bringing it to a point of enabling same-sex blessings.
"Jayne Ozanne, whose Foundation instigated the new awards, said: 'It is so important to recognise the role that leaders have in tackling prejudice and discrimination at an institutional or national level. So many of us yearn for change, but few know how to achieve it. I am thrilled that we are able to recognise some of our unsung heroes who have given so much in the fight for equality'.
It is not prejudicial and discriminatory to belief other than these people would have us believe.

More 'believers' or 'seasonal consumerism at its worst' as Richard Frith, canon precentor at Southwell minster described it.

Thanks to Archbishop Cranmer for this video of a 'Believe' sweater wearing cleric explaining what believing means to her.
The bishops of the Church in Wales clearly demonstrate that reciting one thing and doing another is what they believe.
If they spent more time avoiding bandwagons they might have a better idea of how to find the straight and narrow and lead their flock towards it.
ReplyDeleteAs it is, the road to hell is wide enough that even the glutton Gregorius Maximus should be able to weeble his way along it.
PP. You only have to view Kate Bottley on the "Pilgrimage" series to know she has a deep sense of faith and more than able to evangelize. She also appears frequently on Song of Praise and presents on Radio 2 Sundays.
ReplyDeleteRather than flog the secular agenda, her ministry is certainly not woke. Their is a book written about evangelism is the Newcastle Diocese, some years ago, in which her then Parish in Blyth, was noted for her passion and devotion.
Her current position in Worksop, has welcomed he enthusiasm. Her in-laws are clergy and due to their influence she became a Christian. Having attended services I can certainly speak highly of her sermon delivery. She would be a better Provincial Communications lead than current postholders
Appearing regularly on "Songs of Praise" is some means of judging????
DeleteAre you really SO GULLIBLE???
It's all guff and fluff, designed to appeal to the intellectual lightweights and the gullible who are desperate to hear it's OK to be queer.
DeletePP. Sorry not gullible. She has a to proven track record of parish ministry and her TV/Radio work is additional. So read my comments you will see I'm not just citing Songs of Praise!
ReplyDeleteShe’s a lovely person - commends faith to many. I love listening to her on Sunday as I get ready for church. Easy to listen to and has an authenticity to her. She’s funny too. Not surprised the old codgers on here dislike her and malign her. Jealous.
ReplyDeleteRuthy
The "Believe" pullovers are just another subliminal way of attempting to normalise the "gay" Rainbow π.
ReplyDeleteIt's all propaganda designed to lead youngsters into the gay "lifestyle" while telling them that it's just fine because their "Priest" is gay.
The deviants have taken over and anyone who dares speak out against it is automatically labelled homophobic.
Girly and gobby, taking Dawn French as her model; just imagine her as your pp! Personally, I should find it a nightmare. The way she ingratiates berself with her interviewees on Youtube I find unappealing. And dare I say it? a bit of exercise wouldn't hurt her.
ReplyDeleteRob
To be fair many clerics are no stranger to the donut bar
DeleteTed
Bottley as a person probably isn't my "cup of tea". But I think she has more depth and spirituality than some here may credit, and I think that she's an excellent advertisement for the Christian faith, upfront about her beliefs in a way which many can relate to. Her recent "Winter Walk" programme was quite reflective and moving.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I have seen of her, and I don't want to see any more, the words superficial, depthless, religious candyfloss and immature spring to mind: presenting tbe cross in a bright and breezy fashion - 'always oook on the bright side of life'. Can you imagine going to her for genuine spiritual advice? That does not make her a bad person, nor does it make her a profound one or one qualified to be a spokesperson for the Christian Faith. How far has the Anglican Church drifted from the inspiring examples set by Evelyn Underhill and Dorothy Kerin!
ReplyDeleteRob
I find it hard to understand how from a campaign using the word believe woman’s jumper and a multicoloured bold writing with that would believe you’ve taken it to jump on a hateful troop on homosexuality. So by this campaign are we now saying that all female clerics are just as bad as homosexuals without taking into account our own prejudgements and I own misgivings.
ReplyDeleteJ
I think that's would they are saying - women and homosexuals are just as bad as each other and God help you if you are both.
DeleteRuthy-exposing-the-hateful-truthy
J and Ruthy-exposing etc.
DeleteTry to understand: not women, but this woman cleric and her like show no substance. Instead frivolity. Too image conscious. They do not represent the Faith credibly. Do not associate traditional believers with this candyfloss religion.
Rob
Yet Rob V believe word on the job also repeats colours if you look at the LGBT so-called flag it uses different colours all way through not repeat the colours it was use and secondly this is a woman’s job so are we really saying that women are as bad as homosexuals because Eve lay pepole oh wearing this. What is quite funny as Christian do you actually have to believe in God you have to believe in Christ that baby that was said to us who became my dad died for our sins.
DeleteJ
Are you related to PP?
DeleteYou're just as unintelligible.
J your response is incomprehensible, at least to me.
DeleteRob
Church in Wales bishop in waiting here!
DeleteItalian Bishop apologises for telling the truth.

The "Believe" sweater colours are different to the LGBT rainbow ones: no orange or purple as far as I can see, but with pinked addred.
ReplyDeleteThese idiots see the rainbow wherever they want to see it, but thank you for your Common sense observation. Largely lost in here I suspect.
DeleteTruthyRuthy
Unfortunately, the rainbow perversion is all too often draped over altars, "faith" tents and anywhere else the deviants can think of putting it to continue the agenda of queering the Church.
DeleteThese jumpers are just the latest fad.
I doubt a single one would have been purchased by female clergy if the word "Believe" had appeared in monocolour, say white.
It's surely only a matter of time before some fool comes up with the idea of Rainbow π dog collars and the lemmings will surely follow!
The only idiots are those who can't or won't see the gay propaganda for what it is.
UntRuthy wouldn't recognise common sense if it poked him/her in the eye.
And what about the rainbow that appeared after the Flood? That's in the Bible, after all!!! Nothing to do with LGBT of course, but it's still a rainbow.
DeleteOf course you can get rainbow dog collars - not AFAIK the type you were thinking of though! https://tinyurl.com/8f98de8t (Other merchandise is available).
DeleteBut this is getting silly ...
The rainbow has been hijacked and queered too BT.
Delete@AB
ReplyDeleteIt's all very well "Mthr" Nicol reciting the Nicene creed but if she truly believes "in One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church" how has she been ordained at all?
She can't have it both ways.
Exactly Cymru'r Groes.
DeleteNonsense. Total Misogynistic nonsense.
DeleteRuthy-aghast-at-inability-to-accept-Truthy
Are you blogging from your circus tent πͺ and wearing your size 24 shoes again untRuthy?
DeleteYes Ruth - fancy a ringside seat to put a smile of your face cupcake? You’re a lion I wouldn’t mind taming.
DeleteRuthy
How mysoginistic of you untRuthy, but I wouldn't soil the seat of my skirt on your seats, thank you all the same.
DeleteGo on Ruth, live dangerously cupcake.
DeleteRuthy
It would be refreshing to receive some reasoned argument from unRuthy or whatever she calls herself instead of insults only. Or is that asking too much?
ReplyDeleteDom
No reasoned argument on here Dom; largely Homophobic and misogynistic hate. Have a nice evening cupcake.
DeleteRuthy
You're not merely asking for a miracle there Dom, but raising the dead!
DeleteAs a female priest of my acquaintance, who is also an academic at the University of Oxford, recently confided to me 'When people ask me why there is residual antipathy towards women priests and a tendency not to treat them seriously, I simply reply "have you come across Kate Bottle?"'!
ReplyDeleteOr Peggy the Pilate, Jenny Wigley, Cyanide Sue, DodoJo, Caiaphas.....?
DeleteThere's a mellifluous cornucopia of the gormless and talentless from which to choose.
And just as male clerics seem to be putting the world to rights…out comes The Monmouth Report.
DeleteSaggyoldclothcat
Don't think for one moment that I'm being chauvinistic SOCC, there are plenty of male clergy I hold in equal contempt, including Randy Andy Pandy, Gregorious Maximus, Darth Insidious --Bazza, not forgetting last and least the antiques dealing dud still in the Llandaff Deanery.
DeleteGabriel I've mentioned previously that I knew the bishop of St Asaph when we were in our teens/early twenties. I dislike what he has introduced to the Church in Wales as bishop but when I knew him, he always behaved impeccably, and yes struggled with his weight. I can't imagine him as sweary and boozy. Having just read the Monmouth Report, I think he's the only bishop who emerges with credit. The former and current Archbishops are repeatedly criticised. I also noted a reference to Ancient Briton pp 61-62 which didn't come across as complimentary. See Thinking Anglicans for any comments as the Report appears there.
DeleteCymraes yn Lloegr
To be clear Cymraes yn Lloegr, if you re-read the reference to this Blog in the Report you will find that the authors were referring to some of the comments, not to the blog itself:
Delete"The Ancient Briton website also covered what was happening in Monmouth for the first time. This blog takes a traditionalist and conservative viewpoint and is generally critical of the leadership of the Church in Wales. On this matter its author or authors seemed to know no more than was in the public domain, but some of the following comments made by its readers were both personal and negative in relation to some of those involved.
I believe the words "on this matter" are highly significant.
DeleteThe obvious inference is that, on other matters, the "author or authors" have known much more "than was in the public domain".
Praise indeed once more for Ancient Briton and some contributors.
Thank you DP. That had not occured to me.
DeleteLet's face it AB, the Church in Wales is hardly going to admit that either you or some of your contributors know more than they should.
DeleteAfter all, why did bully boy --Bazza shut down the Llandaffchester Chronicles?
It wasn't because they were helpful or supportive of his twisted and deviant agenda!
Resistance is not futile, as we're all beginning to see.
Bring down the house of cards.
@AB and DP
DeleteFollowing on from this blog receiving an honourable mention in the report, the other inference is that Church in Wales clergy of all levels of seniority are regular readers.
We know some clergy are also contributors.
Why is the coordinator of the anonymous consultation of full-time St Davids clergy about their bishop withholding tbe result? Is it because it is too unfavourable to her?
ReplyDeleteRob
Ruthy.
ReplyDeletePls refrain from using the term 'cupcake'. It paints you as juvenile. If you are unhappy with your tendencies remember that the Church will always accept you, and your anger is unnecessary.
LW
It was speculated before that Ruthy was in fact the bishop of St Davids in disguise. This juvenile behaviour would line up!
DeleteET
The total b*ll*cks he/she spouts would also line up.
DeleteWhatever, muffin. Never trust an AB supporter.
DeleteRuthy.
Never never never trust untRuthy.
DeleteSome good news of common sense prevailing today.
