If only it had been Bangor. If only. It would have been a treat to see the part-time Dean's face, coming back from a Holy Week mini break, only to discover the destruction.

"Why didn't someone rescue the precious artefacts"? she would ask.

"Oh, because the Cathedral is bolted shut, except for a few hours each day, and no-one knows where the keys are"! the poor bl**dy infantry would reply with jaded resignation.

    1. I wonder if they have opened a separate bank account for all the millions that have been promised or whether it will all just go into the general fund aka Captain Peacock and Bonaparte accountancy methodology?

    2. Well there'll be no shortage of ash for Ash Wednesday next year.
It won't be long before some entrepreneurial individual will be selling packets of it to the gullible along with Jesus keyrings and Pope fridge magnets.
All proceeds to the rebuilding fund of course!

  2. I find it quite sickening to read of wealthy French families and industrialists trying to outdo each other with announcements of pledges of 100s of millions of euros.

The Roman Catholic church is quite able to afford to rebuild Notre Dame without any difficulty whatsoever and plate it in gold leaf too.

  3. PP. What is interesting is Notre Dame is owned by the state, as are many of its ancient buildings. The RC only have stewardship of these buildings and are not responsible for maintenance This was reported on Sky News last evening. Is there a lesson for UK, as cathedrals are struggling.
Can anyone imagine WAG running our 6, would certainly put oil on troubled waters.

    1. I understood the French "state" to be entirely secular.
      Am I mistaken?
