A glimmer of hope for the Church in Wales

The Archdeacon of Carmarthen, Dorrien Davies, is to be the 130th Bishop of St Davids
Source: Church in Wales

There is a glimmer of hope for the Church in Wales following the announcement that the Ven Dorrien Davies has been elected to be the 130th Bishop of St Davids.

There were many expressions of delight following the announcement which are summed up in the response: "The right person to bring healing and allow the Diocese to move forward together."

A former St Davids Canon Residentiary, the bishop elect asked for the Diocese and the Province to pray for him as he begins the difficult task of rescuing the diocese of St Davids from mistakes of the past and for bringing back some credibility to the Church in Wales. Of that he can be assured.

Postscript [12.11.2023]

"Let's make this journey together" - The new Bishop of St Davids looks ahead to his forthcoming role and what the future holds for St Davids Diocese.

  2. Ven Dorrien does indeed seem a pleasant man, however it is a shame that Bishop Joanna was pushed out. It really need not have come to this if she had stood her ground.
I for one quietly agree with her statement "never trust a Tory". Wales has always been Labour - her big mistake was saying what we are all thinking out loud!
I do feel we have taken a step backwards now in terms of Gender Equality. We have lost a lovely female Bishop in Joanna and also recently lost the popular Bishop June of Llandaff when she retired. We are now unequal again 4 Men : 2 Women. Archbishop Andy must take urgent action and appoint a female Assistant Bishop immediately!

    1. Not sure Bishop June was popular. Divisive, yes, but popular? I don't think so. I never hear anyone say they miss her and wish she was back. Not one person. Correct me if I am wrong.

Good riddance to the pair of them.

    3. True CinW Feminist,
Good grief, what planet are you on, what ever happened to the best person for the job? The previous Bishop of that Diocese was a complete disaster from start to finish. Jolly June was a bully, and lacked any pastoral skills regarding her clergy. I might be unpopular for saying this, but it had nothing to do with what ever sex they happened to be. They were both completely incompetent and their appointments were made because they were female.
I am glad to see Dorrian appointed, I think he is a good choice. Insisting that the next assistant bishop is a female just to maintain parity is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard.
I currently worship in an area that has had very competant female clergy for a number of years. One is due to retire soon, to create parity should we seek to recruit a man, or look for the best person for the job?

    4. Why do you think that a balance of sexes on the bench is the primary criterion in choosing a bishop? The outstanding candidate would've been denied simply for being a man. Where's the sense in that?

Fortunately the Electoral College were not swayed by such nonsense.

    5. Caiaphas must go!18 October 2023 at 21:08

Caiaphas was so popular her own clergy wrote to the Church Times to let a far wider audience know just how popular she was.

The only thing she achieved in her entire five years was finally getting rid of the antiques dealing tealeaf dud Capon from the Llandaff Deanery.

    6. Bishop June certainly did not suffer fools gladly, however we should all appreciate the contribution she made to the Province. Her work welcoming in the marginalised, including refugees and the LGBTQIA2+ community, was valued, as was her work encouraging the church to embrace modern pilgrimage. I do wish her well in her retirement.

    7. Caiaphas was a fool, taken in by the Capon for at least two years before she finally realised she'd been duped and lied to, especially about the fiddled Organ appeal accounts and the two Davids
The less said about illegal immigrants, dodgy asylum seekers and the alphabet soup cabal, the better.
      Modern pilgrimage?
      😂
Her idea of pilgrimage was visits to a country hotel for meetings while stuffing her face with cream teas, trips to Grangetown to gorge herself on large Clarke's pies and a long weekend to Santiago da Compostela, all on the Diocesan tab.
June "I am the accuser" Osborne is not missed in the least.

    8. During the pandemic she went silent. Just when the clergy and people needed her, she retreated at Esgobty. She was a disaster as a bishop, which makes us appreciate why the CofE never made her one. I wish her no ill-will, but her tenure as Bishop was a complete disaster. I say this as a professional lay person.

You can now add the ninny to the list of imposters.
The only ones obsessed with genders are the fools, within or without the cult in Wales, who don't know whether they've got one or not.
The other 99.995% of the population know they're male or female, including the gays and dykes.

  3. We are certainly not all thinking...never trust a Tory. Many of us are Tories and have every right to be Tory. A Bishop should be there for all people..... whatever their politics. Not a symbol of hatred and division. This seems a wise appointment, a safe trusted person. Danny Jones

  4. In welcoming some respite from past lunacies and perhaps brief return to CinW Electoral College sanity, can we please refrain from encouraging Andrew John from the wastefulness and nonsense of appointing for himself an Assistant Bishop for the small parish of Bangor Diocese. He already has three archdeacons, bishop's chaplains and secretaries, layers of gatekeepers and bag-carriers and sychophants-aplenty. More to the point, with a collapsing diocese he hasn't got enough to do as it is without trying to find extra work to justify appointment of an underling. Don't encourage him. The only people in Bangor who'd advantage from his empire-building would be local estate agents .... another six-bedroom half-million pound property to buy to add to the 'clergy' estate.

  7. It's hardly surprising that the former Bishops of Llandaff was such a disaster. Here is a presentation of the *traditional* view that the priesthood (and therefore also the episcopate) is naturally confined to members of the male sex. https://orthochristian.com/156727.html?fbclid=IwAR0a2NA8JWGE_s76wMiEIqX82yzrw2Nncl7GUWJ_YkVIhukVh3THgvg6tKQ

    5. Annon 18/9. I totally disagree with you, in the removal of Joanna, as Bishop of St David's Diocese. Surely all who are elected or appointed to Senior Positions within a Company, and that is exactly what the Church in Wales has become, a Company, surely these people realise what they believe is one thing, what they say is something different. The election and appointment of Joanna Legg was a total mistake, only done to appese those who want to see a female Archbishop. Similarly, we have an individual elected to the position of Bishop of Monmouth. Cherry Vann is a lesbian who is involved in a relationship recognised in Secular Society, but not in Ecclesiastical Society/Law. How can such a person swear to uphold the teachings of the Bible when they themselves are involved in a relationship expressly forbiden within the Faith they say they follow

  14. @ Quill Pen
SEMTEX-H is a better option to Dynamite in removing Stallard but that's by the by. Left in place and on recent 'tradition' in electing archbishops in Wales, then Stallard will succeed the gormless ++Andy McJohn. This assumes that period spent as Assistant Bishop is counted in as 'time served'. If ++Andy quit tomorrow, then +Gregory would fill his boots but if he lingers on until 70 then Stallard - three years his junior - gets to buy herself an even larger wigwam of a mitre and if there's anything left of the CinW to ruin by then, she gets free reign.
So, back to that idea of Semtex although with Stallard, a 'Penny Banger' would probably do the trick.
