  20. Meanwhile business as usual at Llandaff Cathedral!

A hasty press release at 6.14pm this evening was dispatched from the Dean's account to a wide range of people on the mailing list. It reads as follows:

"Llandaff Cathedral Music Foundation Launch Postponed

    "Dear Supporter,

It is with regret that, due to circumstances beyond our control, the event to launch the Llandaff Cathedral Music Foundation on September 30th is postponed.

The Charity Commission is unable to incorporate the organisation at present. We are conscious of our duty under the Fundraising Regulator's Code of Practice and feel that launching the Foundation without incorporated charity status may be misleading.

This will be disappointing for our supporters, stakeholders and key members of staff who have devoted their time to the success of the launch, but we feel that postponing the event is our only option.

Thank you for your support of this venture. We look forward to welcoming you to support the work of the Cathedral's Music Department in future.

    Yours faithfully,

    The Very Reverend Richard Peers
    Dean of Llandaff"

Given the flagship status of the Music Foundation, this postponement is rather intriguing. The project has been underway since Oct 22 with Elizabeth Atherton as its Executive: https://www.llandaffcathedral.org.uk/music-foundation/

They had commissioned composer Iain Farrington to write a new piece for the launch event too: https://twitter.com/LlandaffCathMF/status/1683397782332121088

One wonders exactly what gave the Charity Commission cold feet about creating a new charity, or what duties in the Fundraising Code of Practice made the launch problematic. No doubt there will be some grumbling on the Green about this setback...

      Delete
    2. New commissions don't come cheap, especially from decent composers. If the foundation has yet to be launched who authorised the commissioning and more pertinently who has paid for it?
Or is the postponement due to the composer not having been paid his fees?

      Delete
    3. With a mere 31 "likes" the launch was destined to be of even less interest than the joke Diocesan infamous "sneak a peek" day a few years ago.
Nobody in their right mind would give money to Llandaff Cathedral, much less to subsidise the poor little rich kids who are already getting a private school education.

      @Landavian
The notes from the May Chapter meeting shed some more light on Music Foundation matters.
Could well be another PR disaster brewing up nicely.

      Delete
    7. Good point @Llandaff Pewster. A glance at the Chapter Minutes from May (at https://www.llandaffcathedral.org.uk/app/uploads/2023/07/2023-May_.pdf) reveals the following:

"The Music Foundation Executive had provided a business planning document to
support Chapter’s consideration of the way forward. This clearly set out the desired
activities but needed further work on the relationship with the Music Department,
and the financial arrangements between the Foundation and Chapter."

That final sentence about the "financial arrangements" might have a bearing on the recent announcement.

In other news, it seems the Cathedral Friends did not hand over all the readies for the new heating system: "The Friends have granted £300,000 against our application for £399,000 re the heating and lighting costs. This will cause financial stress later in the year"

No doubt they had their reasons for withholding the additional £99K.

      Delete
    8. Although the recent revamp of the Cathedral website has removed previous Chapter minutes, one can find them on this page: http://web.archive.org/web/20230422064615/https://www.llandaffcathedral.org.uk/contact/the-chapter/

The January 2023 Minutes reveal the following: "Music foundation: The Precentor and Canon Bennett are working with Liz Atherton on a charitable constitution for a Music Foundation."

Therefore the setting up of the Foundation charity began at least eight months ago. The first mention of the Foundation is in the September 2022 Minutes:

"Possible staffing for the setting up of a Music Foundation, and for a Cathedral
      Festival in 2023, was discussed."

Regarding the heating system, the November 2022 Minutes show that the cost was originally closer to the £300K eventually provided by the Friends. It rose by £64K between Nov '22 and May '23:

"New heating system: The proposal was to replace the boilers in summer 2023, in
preparation for the addition of air-source heat pumps in 2024. Costs to the end of
design amounted to £61,450. The 2023 installation work was currently set at
£335,000, around the figure the Friends were expecting to fund when the Architect
      met with them"
