Theology today

Source: Church in Wales Diocesan press releases

News from Monmouth: "Bishop Cherry, in consultation with Dean Ian, has appointed the Revd Dr Manon Ceridwen James as Honorary Canon Theologian at St Woolos’ Cathedral." Bishop Cherry is 'delighted' that Manon has accepted this invitation. No surprise there!

Theology in the Church in Wales today is not what it was. Today, verses in the Bible are twisted to suit secular circumstances or ignored altogether so it is not difficult to understand that the same sex partnered bishop is delighted with her new appointment.

Two previous blog entries, Misogyny, repression and stigmatisation and Par for the course drew attention to Canon James' book on Welsh feminist theology Women, Identity and Religion in Wales.

It claimed to offer "significant and original insights into women, Welsh identity and religion":

"Women, Identity and Religion in Wales by Manon Ceridwen James, a Canon at the Cathedral, is the first comprehensive study of its kind from a present-day perspective. At the heart of the book are conversations with thirteen women whose lives and experiences reveal how women facing misogyny, repression and stigmatisation are able to respond with resilience and humour."

A regular critic of this blog commented under my previous entry that bishop Cherry is  a "focus for unity and you [another commentator] would do well to apply the 'by their fruits' axiom in regards to assessing her ministry."

The previous paragraph of the biblical text was conveniently ignored: "Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves."

  1. Thank you for the book recommendation. I have just reserved a copy at my local library.

    5. Tongue-firmly-in-cheek mode! But I wouldn't have heard of the book (or its author) previously, and I do feel it might be worth reading. There is now a large corpus of feminist/womanist theological studies and I want to see what she says. I suspect, from reading her background, that this study is as much sociological as strictly theological; as someone who struggled with the strict barriers which seemed to exist when I did my postgraduate studies at King's College London I welcome the interdisciplinary "crossovers" which are now more common and can shed a lot of light. BTW although the author's first degree was indeed at Pontypridd her Master's and (I think) Doctoral studies were carried out at Chester and the book is published by the University of Wales Press.

    6. If you feel it "might be worth reading" so strongly, why not purchase your own copy rather than squander Council tax payer's money?

  2. All very well calling out the madcap bishops of various Welsh diocese, but presumably these ferel-cats in Mitres run their gormless ideas and weird senior appoints by Andy/Alice John if only out of courtesy to his self-important position as Archbishop of Wales.

Where is he in slapping these badly elected bishops down and denouncing their ruinous adventures. Perhaps AB subscribers might look to him for 'leadership' and if its not there muster against the poser.

    2. The problem here is that Manon is not a theologian. Her PhD was based on the experiences of women so is not a serious piece of theology. She has done nothing that qualifies her to be described as "a theologian."

  5. Does the Anglican Church in Wales equate Theology and Sociology?

    1. Of course Theology, Sociology (and Anthropology) are different. But although it must be a good thing to study theology with rigour, I don't we can or should divorce it from more "human" aspects. For one thing, abstract theology, however fascinating, can be pretty abstruse and divorced from the realities of life. We must also remember that all theology developed in a particular socio-cultural context, whether that be Trinitarianism and the Council of Nicaea, Luther and Calvin's Reformed understandings, 1960s South American Liberation theology, or whatever. Indeed today we are rightly seeing theology being done in Africa or Asia; I don't know much about this but I'm sure it sometimes leads to insights which may startle or challenge us.

      Delete
    2. Please read line 2 as "I don't think we can or should divorce it ...".

      Delete
    3. You obviously have a rather roseate view of Sociology as It only reflects scientific accuracy when problems can be operationalised and measured. Many of its foundation thinkers such as Marx, Weber, Durkheim and Talcott Parsons can be very abstruse and "divorced from the realities of life".

      Delete
    4. Fair comment (although I don't know Parsons), hopefully things have moved on since those early days. Not all sociologists regard religion as purely "functional".

      Delete
    5. A majority of the population in the UK consider religion to be dysfunctional.

      Delete
    6. That may well be true (sadly) but I'm pretty sure you realised I was using the word in a more specific sense!

      Delete
    7. I suspect the majority of the population consider sociologists are also dysfunctional.

    8. There is a world of difference between the scientific sociology of the LSE and that common to bishops without sociological qualifications. Interestingly enough in the early 80s the chairman of the LSE Sociology Department was Professor David Martin , Chairman of the Prayer Book Society.

  6. Yep. I'm fully aware of that Seymour; something that has only very recently cropped up as the assumed position but which, in fact, has no foundation in 'constitution' or 'protocol' of the C-in-W. That said however, it ought not prevent - should he have the bollox - ++Andrew from using his pulpit to speak-out, using his pen to publish his views, or warning all other potential bishops pushing for appointments that they fall in line with doctrine and accepted theology ... or don't bother applying. Yes. He has clout. Problem is he's too weak to apply it.

    1. Unfortunately AC, the Arch-Heretic and Chief Apostate of Wales is just as heretical as the others who twisted Scripture to embrace the zeitgeist. Should he say anything, the reply he would get is Physician, heal yourself.
The Cult in Wales needs to be put out of its misery. I was talking to a friend who attends a church which used to have a congregation of 70-80 before the pandemic. They are now lucky if they get into double figures. People have left because they do not agree with the blessing of SSM and they do not like misery areas. The planksitters are convinced that they are right and everyone else is wrong. "She who is no more" in Llandaff even congratulated herself at her departure for getting the diocese into teams. I am sure that people in the northernmost parts of Anglesey must have heard the collective sigh of relief from Llandaff on 1 December.

    2. It is neither an "assumed" position nor recent AC but has been the case for at least fifty years to my certain knowledge.
When confronted by the then Archbishop with evidence of his cottaging exploits in Llandaff fields, Eryl Thomas and instructed to put an immediate stop to such behaviour, Eryl told him in no uncertain terms where to put his instructions.
A year or so later it was all over the Western Mail and arguably Llandaff has never recovered.

  7. My former parish also went from 40/50 to average of 12. This was mainly because the PP and curate could not be arsed to lift up the phone and ask how folk were doing. I did tell them that if they both just rang one person a day, they'd cover the whole congregation in a month and it would be so much appreciated. But no! They knew best, and now folk have voted, with their feet.

A true Troll pretends to be part of the group when their real intent is to create conflict for their own amusement. I'm not in the least bit part of this group nor am I ever amused by what I read here - genuinely distressed by it to be honest.

I give this site time only to add a counter voice to the right-wing homophobic guff I read here - I offer a counter narrative. Gas light me as a Troll – I expect nothing less.
