Episcopal trick or treat?

Bishop Joanna with some Halloween prop suggestions added   Original photo: Christian Today/CiW

One facet of Halloween festivities that few of us can avoid regardless of our attitude is 'Trick or Treating'.

Given her penchant for matters secular the bishop of St Davids could enter fully into the festive spirit by swopping headgear and staff for something more suited to the expectations of trick and treaters.

More importantly for the Church in Wales and Anglicanism in general is whether Joanna would have chosen trick or treat.

'Away from work' until the end of October Joanna could have treated Anglicans by announcing her retirement rather than trick the Church again by returning to duties, such as they are given her devotion to party politics.

Sadly she is reported to be more eager to trick the Church and treat herself by beginning 'a phased return to work from November 1'.

This is a problem not confined to the Church in Wales with their unaccountable bishops.

The Scottish Episcopal Church is in a similar position: "The Times reports the Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church is in fear of being deposed by the members of the church’s College of Bishops over his handling of the Anne Dyer affair. An independent investigation recommenced the Rt. Rev. Anne Dyer, Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney be placed on a terminal sabbatical leave for mismanagement. The primus, the Most Rev. Mark Strange, is being blamed by his brother bishops for Dyer’s appointment and the public relations fiascos that have ensued."

Meanwhile, before the election of the next Archbishop of Wales can take place, the appointment the bishop of Swansea and Brecon is awaited with uneasy anticipation

Given the mess in which the bench finds itself after successively appointing like-minded individuals they should realise that they cannot afford another botched job. But I doubt it.

More likely they will have another trick up their sleeve to take the Church in Wales even further from its roots.

Postscript [29.10.2021]

The 'Away from work' link in paragraph 4 above has been removed. A new notice under the original absence date 'Posted: 21 June 2021' has appeared advising that "Bishop Joanna is to make a phased return to work following four months of ill health. She will return to her office on Monday November 1st."

Having abandoned her Twitter account on which she spent so much of her time, presumably her duties will be light. The nature of the bishop's ill health has not been disclosed.

Coinciding as it did with breaking news of her party political Twitter activities many will draw their own conclusions as she brazens it out without any sign of contrition other than being sorry for being caught out.

The whole episode stinks to high heaven but the Church in Wales carries on regardless.

Joanna's absence has not prevented her from adding her name to those of other bishops' joint statements, eg, Statement on COP26 .

She will call the bluff of all the parish officers.
They then must resign and walk away without hesitation and en masse.

  4. You really are the most unkind blogger I have come across in church circles in a very long time. You’re clearly intent on continuing a persecution of +Joanna with your childish manipulation of the image which heads this article, casting her once again in the guise of a witch. This is telling and you (and your kind) would do well to remember that the hunt of witches in the past had nothing to do with fighting evil or resisting the devil. It was naked misogyny, the goal of which was to repress, demean and persecute the intellect of all women. +Joanna is no witch, and unlike you, she has gained a PhD and is a woman of far superior knowledge than you will ever be. Your accusations of witchcraft anger me and border on the demonic. Shame on you.

What is it with men of your type when it comes to women who hold serious political and religious power? No doubt you would have been on the side of those who undermined Joan of Arc back in the day: you recall that she led the French to victory and was adored in France for her purity, bravery and intellect. However, the English leadership couldn’t bear her (nor beat her) and so they sought to undermine her, crediting her success to demonic means. When she was eventually captured, they tried her for witchcraft, citing as proof her ability to outwit her male examiners.

I’m pleased +Joanna is gradually returning to her work; I hope that she will tread carefully as she continues to slay the demons of misogyny and gossip in the church. I trust that her senior team – each and every one of them – will give her 100% support and do so vocally, publicly and unequivocally. I trust her fellow bishops to do the same.

    1. @ Ruthy:

There's nothing new about spleen within the church, as, to take but one early instance, any exploration of the debates which took place during the fifth century councils which attempted to settle the issue of the nature of Christ will swiftly reveal.

Back then Cyril of Alexandria was hailed as a Christian hero - at least in the Latin and Hellenistic church traditions if not among the orientals - because his doctrine of the nature of Christ won acceptance in those parts of the church rather than because of his personal sanctity, charity and sweet holiness of life. Because in Cyril those qualities seem to have been noticeably absent.

No difference now. As an old priest in Swansea and Brecon diocese whom I knew well forty years ago, now long dead, used to say, 'human nature's very prevalent'. As it was in the beginning, so it is now. And, maybe, it ever shall be, world without end!

  9. On a slightly different note.
I see that the Bench has issues demands on climate change to the UK government.
Can I ask the Bench when it will put its demands into action?
Are all Vicarages to have insulation upgrades, electric heat pumps and solar panels.
Will the CiW help each Parish to do similar in all Churches and halls?
I recall several years ago, the CiW produced a glossy brochure telling Churches to spend more to go green. I asked the parsonage board if that applied to Vicarages too, and was laughed at.
It's always easy to tell others what to do than do it ourselves.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The blind support by the CinW for the climate change frenzy is for me the main reason for leaving the church. Articulate, sensible discussion by all means, but simply ignoring facts that don't support the argument or that its fashionable to support this cause, do nothing for the gravitas the church is supposed to bring to discussions. Climate change has been around for millenia, there is nothing new about it, google Milankovitch cycles for a quick scene setter. The underlying causes for this have never satisfactorily been explained though various theories are advanced. Without knowing what the natural factors are it's difficult to meaningfully quantify the effects of fossil fuels, doubtless they play a part but to what extent is analogous to trying to resolve an equation without knowing what all the various terms mean. There is a lot of good that has come from efforts to clean up the environment, air quality is better, mountains of waste are reducing, coal tips disappearing etc and long may it continue. But wrecking economies and the misery that will bring in the hope we can change the climte should not form the vision for the future. We cannot accurately predict the weather more than a few days in advance so to say by getting to nett zero we can actually change the weather patterns that form future climate beggars belief.

    3. Indeed Lux Et Veritas, the Llandaff accounts have been published with a special page detailing the shenanigans *allegedly* perpetrated by the Disappearing Dean.

Go to page 24 in the PDF at this link: https://www.llandaffcathedral.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Llandaff-Cathedral-Accounts-2020-for-filing.pdf

Under the heading "Related party transactions and trustees' remuneration, expenses and benefits", the Chapter states:

"The trustees are required under section 8(5) of The Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 to prepare the statement of accounts in accordance with the Charities SORP, which requires trustees to disclose certain information about the remuneration and other benefits received by trustees."

      They then outline the following:

"In 2021, Chapter has been investigating expenditure totalling £69,350 between 2016 and 2020 of which at least £35,551 it does not believe was approved by the trustees, as required in law.

"As a result of a report commissioned by Chapter (and shared with the Charity Commission) from a Queen’s Counsel independent of the trustees, Chapter has concluded that the following amounts were apparently authorised by The Very Reverend Gerwyn Capon which benefited him personally, directly or indirectly, but were not approved by the trustees of the charity:

      • for work at the Deanery (not owned or maintained by the charity), including the purchase of an Aga cooker and wood-burning stove: £22,173
      • Furniture, artwork and other items: £4,789
      • Entertaining, travel and other costs: £5,325

"A further £3,264 was apparently authorised by The Very Reverend Gerwyn Capon for payment to an employee in addition to salary, without the authority of the trustees."

This implies that when the Cathedral was running at a considerable loss, Capon was furnishing the Deanery in style and paying for away days and fine dining. £35K over four years is not an inconsiderable sum either.

This also begs the question, what happened to the remainder of the £69K being investigated? Also, how did the Dean manage to get away with this for so long, and how is he still "on the sick" when this fraud should be dealt with by the proper authorities?

    4. The real question is what the hell were the other Trustees doing while this was going on?

Not to mention the PCC and those present at the annual Easter Vestry meetings at which votes were held to "approve" the annual accounts?

And what about the Cathedral auditors?

By the sound of things it was only this blog and its contributors that were questioning the annual accounts and slated for doing so by the gay cabal and the fag hags supporters of --Bazza's golf caddie!

Perhaps now this has come to light, the fools in the Charity Commission will revisit the diet of BS they were fed by the Capon over the Organ appeal too?
After all, on the face of it he must have zero credibility by now?

Here's hoping that matters have also been referred to the fraud squad at South Wales police as it seems to me there could well be a conspiracy to defraud the Cathedral.

The irony is that they too were being warned by this blog and contributors but also, like the Cathedral authorities, chose to ignore the warnings.

      @Caiaphas must go!
      I agree with you entirely.
It seems that all the time Gerwhine was writing his poison pen letters to elderly widows, calling out long-standing members of his congregation as "subversive", getting rid of the Meebecke choir and telling people that they were banned from running the shop, being a Welcomer and serving at the altar for Welsh services, he was allegedly lining his own pockets from the collection plate.

Little wonder then that Linda Quinn's suggestion (that G4S take over the responsibilities for banking the cash etc) was refused.

How much has it cost to hire an external independent QC to start taking the lid off the can of worms?
Will the new lay Chapter rise to the challenge of publishing that?

If Gerwhine had a shred of decency in him he would have resigned in shame long since.

The same applies to June Osborne. Remember how she earned the epithet of Caiaphas in the first place?
"In what capacity are you here?"
      "I am the accuser!"
That was her response to two long serving members of her flock (one a lawyer, the other a businessman) who were trying to do the right thing and get to the bottom of what was going on with the finances at Llandaff Cathedral.
Rather than check the facts for herself she chose to adopt the "I trust and support my Dean and believe whatever he says" approach.

Her faith in Gerwhine was misplaced and her judgement totally flawed.
If she had a shred of decency in her she too would resign.

  17. PP. AB and Co should be congratulated, for the constancy of the drip feed of the Llandaff Chronicle of deceit, ineptitudes and significant fraud. Even though silence and inaction prevailed as the Dean and his compatriots reigned fear, caustic lies and much more.
But, this news must finally make each one of you and those who brought this to light much joy as the sword falls swiftly.

The Bishop may for whatever reason is not frequently seen as a person who actually listens. But, on this occasion it is clear she was playing the "long game" the adage "give them enough rope and they will hang themselves" seems her mode operandi, and it paid off!
As a Dean of a huge historic cathedral she had years in knowing the importance of fiscal matters. This obviously aided her to see through the "smoke and mirrors". She may not be well favoured, but on this occasion a little gratitude may be in order, as she prepares the Solemn Requiem for the demise of the chief of cathedral bandits who plundered the coffers and thought he could get away with it

The independent QCs is that not obvious? Surely, it is very probable that he resides at Llys Esgob.

The CiW and Charity Commission cannot be leanient, I would hope that the SW Police will be in this toxic mix pulling apart the ingredients and mixers and hauling them into court. Perhaps at last the Dark Lord, will be found in forensic light with a little of this couldrun's mix on his hands.

      Don't make me laugh.
The dud in the Llandaff Deanery has been AWOL since March 2020,disappearing before the first Covid lockdown.
The accounts just published on the Cathedral website make it clear that the current Chapter began their investigation in 2021.
I can only conclude therefore that it took Gerard Elias QC and his fellow lay Chapter members a year to realise that they had a problem and then they needed to hire an outside QC to pinpoint the problem for them.
There's no evidence available at present to suggest Caiaphas has been involved at any stage and since Gerwhine is employed and paid by the Representative Body, any evidence of theft, fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud, malfeasance along with any other examples of gross misconduct would have to be supplied to the RB.
The theft or misapplication of a Charity's money should also be reported to the Charity Commissioners as well as the police.

The simple fact that Llandaff has been missing a Dean, without any explanation until yesterday, for some 21 months suggests there's nothing swift about it.
On the contrary, I am more inclined to believe that the intention was to engage in another cover up, but I suspect Caiaphas has discovered that's not easy to do with a newly appointed QC as vice chairman of her new lay Chapter.

As for holding out the begging bowl two weeks ago to the few remaining pew sitters in the hope of plugging a £65k hole in the annual accounts? Well, good luck with that.
No-one in their right mind would give another penny unless and until the full extent of the problems had been revealed.
Let the trustees put their hands in their own pockets, it might teach a few of them to be more diligent and more vigilant in future.

The only significant remaining risk is that giving falls substantially.
We continue to be grateful to all those who commit to regular giving, and although there was a fall in other giving because of the lack of services, regular giving is largely unaffected, and we have no reason to expect it to fall significantly further.

    5. Order some more of these mugs for the Diocesan Conference.

I never knew being a Tory could be so tiring. I think that's enough for today.

  21. Week 2: I am exonerated! Read all about he corrupt dealings of Tory scum in the Press. I'm back St Jeremy. All is forgiven. I knew I was right all along. Every Tory member is not to be trusted and every Labour supporter is. Simples.

    1. She did have a point - I admire her and would 100% never trust a Tory.

Twitter is a better place without her.

  22. Dear Diary,
It’s the end of week 2, and I am still here. My brother and sister bishops have turned up trumps. Juno arranged for the report on the Dean of Llandaff to be released, and that focused people’s attentions to South Wales for a while. Andy announced the new bishop for Swansea and Brecon. And now, Greggers, as I affectionately call him, made the headlines by blessing a same sex marriage. This is going well. I am even thankful to Reverend Josh Maynard, who took the spotlight off me with his announcement. When the “Ooh! Aah!” over Greggers dies down, Cherry will make an announcement that should blow people’s socks off! She is about to appoint a black lesbian amputee as Archdeacon of the Gwent Valleys. She will tell the press that it is all about inclusivity. The only unfortunate thing is that the woman hasn’t been ordained yet; but why let a little thing like that get in the way? I wish I had thought of it before she did. The bitch!
Back here, at Llys Esgob, and I am keeping my head down. This phased return to work is very tedious. I have finished colouring in my two adult colouring books. Daytime TV is getting boring. The only stimulation are the letters from churchwardens and treasurers resigning. I wish I was still on Twitter, but even if I was, Adrian has hidden my iphone from me. He reckons it’s my therapy. Heigh-ho, not much more to say. I’d better get my emery board out and file my nails.

    1. Worthy of the Llandaffchester Chronicles Seymour. 😂

Oh how we miss the Llandaffchester Chronicles, if only they could be resurrected because there's so much potential for satirical mischief-making going begging, what a waste.

    2. Don't you mean sharpen them, Seymour?
She has been so cruel during her tenure.

  23. PP. How can you have an Archdeacon, not ordained, no title services, parish experience or, the credibility of formation? Surely, a bishop would be setting a precidence that basically says "anything goes".

    1. Keep working on that sense of humour PP.
And if you mean a precedent of "anything goes", that has been the objective in Wales since His --Darkness got the Episcopal purple.

  24. PP Lux Et Veritas - I do have a sense of humour. Surely, even typos are allowed!
As for His Darkness, I have to agree. If the lead bishop becomes AB, the puppet master rises!
