Feminizing of the Church in Wales to accelerate?

The launch of MAE Cymru, a 'Charitable Incorporated Organisation' to promote gender equality in the Church in Wales                         Photo: Church in Wales

Last week I received three 'anonymous' comments without content apart from the name of one of the female clerics listed in the Diocese of Llandaff''s Bishops, Clergy & Diocesan Personnel. All has become clearer.

I shall spare her the embarrassment of naming her in case the rumours circulating prove to be untrue but I understand that the bishop of Llandaff has chosen the named female cleric to be her chaplain.

Mae Cymru's 'charitable' aim along with gender parity and the advancement of all things gay are high on the list of priorities of the first women bishops of Llandaff and of St Davids where the Dean of St Davids has announced that he will retire at the Friends Festival on 9th September.

The Canon Residentiary will also be leaving St Davids to become the next Archdeacon of Carmarthen in November leaving two key Cathedral vacancies to be filled with serious implications for attendance on current feminizing trends.

  1. All things gay were certainly preoccupying the bishop of St David's last Sunday. She was invited to preach at the morning service at the Eisteddfod in Anglesey. (Why not the bishop of Bangor?) As the entire week's festival is exclusively Welsh, she was obliged to preach in Welsh. She is not a Welsh speaker, so the 'sermon' had been translated into Welsh which she read in a terrible accent. I was watching on S4C and I had to switch off the sound after a minute because her pronunciation was so bad. I put on the subtitles and was appalled that her sermon was about LGBT rights. This was completely inappropriate in front of a congregation which had a lot of 'small c' conservative chapelgoers. There is much in the festival this week to remember Hedd Wyn. Maybe she has no idea who he is. I hope her sermon has caused a lot of disquiet and not in the way that she intended.

  2. There's no truth in it being a rumour AB, it was posted all over Facebook early last week.
Quite a smart move by June if you think about it. The last decent Dean of Llandaff was John Rogers so if June needs reliable information about how nice Llandaff used to be (before the dark --Lord imposed Bonaparte and the glove puppet on us) who better to have in the office next door than his daughter?
Between them, she and the Canon Residentiary will be able to direct June's attention to the cupboards concealing the skeletons.
Between this news and the leak of a disciplinary Tribunal underway I imagine the packing has already started in the Deanery.

  3. Thank you for your clarification on the appointment TfC. So the name of the bishop's chaplain is confirmed as the Rev Dr Sarah Rogers, currently the Diocesan Youth Officer.

May I take this opportunity to remind other commentators that they must add a pen name if they wish to see their comments published. Without doing so it is impossible to distinguish one commentator from another resulting in the loss of valuable contributions.

  4. Since the days of the 2nd Temple in Jerusalem - many many moons ago - a male religious cult has survived, adapted and re-packaged itself to this day, even changing its 'religion' along the way, manifested especially in the Papacy and the Church of Rome. No female clerical (feminist or not) has yet, to date, given me a rational explanation as to why they want to be part of what is rightly a male church. Surely the logical step is to start their own female led church? Or maybe your 'headline' says it all - their goal has always been 'the feminizing' of the Anglican church!

    1. They probably need to be on the inside of the fenced garden because of this thing called 'Catholicity'. Of course, they remain blind to the fact it all ended in Wales in 1997 when the first female was ordained priest- the veil was rent in two.

Now, with women bishops swamping the ecclesiastical market place with LBGT, it has become irretrievable.

    1. The University Anglican Chaplaincy might be worth an investigation by the bishop and her chaplain - currently all tweet and no action? It's high time that it came under the superb Dr Sarah Rowland Jones at St John's Church in the city centre.

  6. Another disciplinary Tribunal on the way? At least by present standards, and leaks, it could be an effective and confidental procedure of settling old scores. Afterall, it is a matter for the hierachy whether it launders its washing in public. Hauling the church into further disrepute and disgrace is a no win situation. Perhaps the female bishops will now lead the bench zitters along the path of righteousness?

Come on girls, read up on bishop John Morgan of Llandaf, and of the turkey minus one leg. Remarkable servant of God. If Adams and Paisley did it, then so can everyone else. We can then move on, either within or outside the present Church in Wales. Or do you want, what has become, business as usual?

  7. Disciplinary Tribunal? Some of us are obviously way behind the times. Do tell.

  8. The source tells me that the disciplinary Tribunal has been convened, the scope of the inquiry is wide ranging, and that a senior external counsel has been appointed to the panel.

  9. Given the dearth of information relating to the alleged convening of this modern day Star Chamber would it not be supremely ironical if the victim were to be Darth Vader himself? Please God.

  10. Intriguing. But who is the subject of the Tribunal? If you can't name names, then a diocese and a hint at the person's position would help.

  11. Will justice come in the form of two new female bishops? Watchman, may have a valid a point about 'Modern day Star Court Chamber'.

Historically, accountability within these private domestic ecclesiastical disciplinary cases appear to depend from whom and where the sun shines at the time, 'Me Laud'.

  12. Surely you do not presume to question the veracity and independence of the members of the learned and unimpeachable legal profession who choose to "moonlight" on these quasi judicial ecclesiastical kangaroo courts Leslie? Perish the thought they are beyond reproach.
