I wonder if you would like to say a few words?"

The Archbishop:
“Mr President, thank you very much. My apologies for being late. As some of you may know we had an ordination here this morning and I had to entertain the preacher to lunch and that went on for some time, so I apologise for coming late.
I just really want to pick up on one or two things that have been said. I thoroughly endorse what the Professor has said [about buying new chairs]. Lest you think that the Bishop's seat is any more comfortable than the seats here, it has no back at all and I try to sit in it as infrequently as possible. So when you're thinking of the general fabric of the Cathedral perhaps you could do something about that seat as well.
I really just want to pick up on what Sir Donald has said, what our President has said, and what the Dean has said, and that is that I've looked up the document for the foundation of the Friends in 1943 and of course it is there simply and solely to maintain the fabric and the services of the Cathedral And as Sir Donald has just said to us, the Friends have been generous to us in the past but of course they haven't been in the position of having so much money as they have at the present time: £¾million, which is quite a huge sum of money.
Now we can say that the fabric does need repair; it is looking tired and I suspect that when we get the Quinquennial Report there will be a great deal of work that will have to be done.
I don't think that people generally are going to give money if they know that there is an organisation meant to support the Cathedral that is sitting on a big sum. It's a bit like filling in grant forms you know - the first thing they ask is: to apply for this grant, how much money are you yourselves going to put in?
The money in the Cathedral, a great deal of it – £¾million in fact - has gone from the Cathedral's coffers on the new organ, in terms of the sale of the house and in terms of the trust money that it had. So really the Cathedral itself at the minute is quite poor in terms of cash reserves.
And so we have the Friends who are sitting on this sum of money, we have the Cathedral that is in need, and so I just really want to urge the Friends through the Council to spend a considerable amount - to give this considerable sum of money to the Cathedral, because as I said, it can't be used for anything else. And I know from other funds of which I'm trustee that the Charity Commissioners don't look very kindly on organisations that have a lot of money and don't spend it. :they force you in the end to say: these are your objects, please get on with it.
So it's a plea, really, from me, as Vice-President and as Bishop of the Diocese, who comes to this cathedral church very frequently, to urge the Friends through the Council to be as generous as it can be. It's been generous in the past; it's now got the opportunity of being far more generous than it's ever been before, simply because it's got more money than it's ever had, and there's no point in having money when the object for which you've been set up is really in need of that money. That's all I've got to say."

Sir Norman Lloyd-Edwards: ''Thank you very much, your Grace"
Llandaff Pewsternoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4019954714374602353.post-62660043713972177942015-09-04T20:21:23.907+01:002015-09-04T20:21:23.907+01:00Poor Sachin.

http://www.llandaffca...Alas, the drivel continues.

http://www.llandaffcathedral.org.uk/documents/BellSept2015Final.pdf

Some Changes to services It struck both Graham and me recently, that there is very little opportunity for prayerful preparation before the 9am and 11am Services on a Sunday – this really is a necessity – it is right that we should prepare ourselves properly. We are of course blessed in having large congregations and the number of services held each Sunday far outweigh the provision at many other Cathedrals. It means that the building is constantly being prepared for worship on a Sunday morning, making time for some measure of stillness before services an added challenge. It is also the case that over the last few years, the readings from the Lectionary are becoming longer. Coupled with various other variables, I have noticed that some of our services tend to overrun. Graham told me of a church he visited recently where there is a dignified period of stillness before the service begins – we want that to happen here. There is a good diet of preaching at the Cathedral, both the 9am and the 11am. Graham and I decided to experiment by cutting the homily the 8am celebration of the Holy Eucharist in order to allow us more time between the end of the 8am and the beginning of the Parish Eucharist. I must admit, having never received any feedback, appreciation or comment after any sermon offered at 8am, I imagined that the congregation would be somewhat indifferent to this change. I am heartened that in fact, a number of the congregation really miss having a homily, to the extent that people have described the 8am as incomplete without it. So I have revised our thinking and will reinstitute it immediately. We will have to seek other ways to foster a period of preparation before the 9am in the short time we have available before the service starts.

[Read: Another failed experiment, I should have thought to ask the congregation first!]

On this theme however, I am considering a complete review of the pattern of services on a Sunday and expect to announce this before Advent. This review may result in a rationalisation of the number of services offered and I will be making a consultation about this in due course.

[Read: We can't even afford our faux Cathedral Choir of scab singers so we're going to have to amalgamate the 9am and 11am services and make do with the Parish Choir]
1662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4019954714374602353.post-31780292559189131342015-08-27T12:58:39.864+01:002015-08-27T12:58:39.864+01:00Page 17

pointed out, there were whole areas of pos...Page 8

pointed out, there were whole areas of possible ambitions and aspirations relating to the cathedral, which simply not mentioned at all e.g. excellence in worship, education possibilities, Celtic heritage and pilgrim heritage possibilities, links to schools and universities, and a host of wider artistic possibilities alongside music.

• The executive summary had never materialised, though in a way the 29 recommendations themselves are that summary.

• The last section also summarises, and reflects on how the report's findings tend to offer support, or not, to the project to seek a Development Director, and concludes that, if it can happen in future, it might be a good way to realise our hopes expressed so far.

PJ went on to say:

Without a Dean in post, it seems to me now that it is impossible for us to set about the 2yr/5yr cathedral development plan which Dean Janet was clearly ready to initiate, which would have used this report as a launch pad. Nor can we take the big step of making a decision one way or the other about a Development Director, without a Dean in post.

In some ways now, the Report seems both a little dated (in relation to the things that had seemed so crucially important last autumn, and everything that has happened since), and to be not something which deserves to receive a great launch with attendant publicity -especially since we're now in a world where the press are itching to stir divisions and make headline stories out of a few people's individual grievances. But maybe we can think together what line we should take. ........

What I would like to suggest is that we pick up the recommendations -and use them to set some of the detailed agendas for our existing groups -or maybe some new groups which need to be formed!

Hence green cards (1/4 each) -which I'm going to suggest we discuss -and then go and pin on to the appropriate group's sheet on wall. Thus today will have set some of the agendas for these groups, who will then regard themselves as accountable to us - PCC and Chapter - for what emerges.

And, as a way forward ........................

The suggestion was made that the Report would be regarded, not as an end in itself, needing to be published and reproduced, but as a Working Document, to inform the processes such as the work of this Vision Day. And after today, it will have accomplished its task, and there are now new agendas and aspirations set, for both Chapter and PCC to work on together.
Llandaff Pewsternoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4019954714374602353.post-90741936649001024032015-08-26T09:42:37.448+01:002015-08-26T09:42:37.448+01:00Page 7
'Ambitions & Aspirations' - Pr...Page 7

'Ambitions & Aspirations' - Prof. Eleri Jones Report

Each person was given a copy of the structure diagram (2012) for Committees and groups at the Cathedral, together with a list of the 29 recommendations from the Report. 10 copies of Prof Jones' report were made available for all to see.

Peggy Jackson offered a quick recap on history of this report and of the Development Group process - thus:

• Group of 4 initially spoke to Dean John Lewis, and subsequently reported to Exec; from there the Devt Group was formed, with membership expanded to include 1rep each from PCC and Chapter.

• Group of 6 reported to joint meeting of Chapter and PCC

• Chapter/PCC decided on survey process to find ambitions and aspirations which a Development Director might help us fulfil

• Applications received, and appointment of Prof Eleri Jones made, after interview.

• The Dean, Very Revd John Lewis, retired

• Decision by Chapter that survey process should continue, with the idea of helping inform - either a profile to be presented to a potential new Dean, or the awareness of a new Dean to the current issues around.

• Report finished November 2012, and copied to Exec and Chapter -at which time it was expected we would organise a launch event, with publication of an executive summary and the recommendations, and making full copies available if requested.

• But.......... Some critical matters arising in choir, and the cathedral arousing press interest. Therefore we hesitated in order not to invite any more press speculation, and possible adverse publicity

• March 2013 -Dean Janet arrived

• Also negative press and publicity issues around the choir being aggravated.

• Dean Janet decided to publish recommendations in The Bell for May, and take detailed examination into planning for a Vision Day in June.

• Even now, in the last week, a Western Mail reporter has asked Anna Morrell about a report which "is believed to be critical of the cathedral", and "why it has been suppressed".

• There are copies here (10 to save bits of paper), if PCC members wish to see them. Chapter's (and Exec's) feelings now are that it would be unwise to give it up to a wider public -not because we want to suppress anything, but because the Report adopted a style of direct questioning from contributors, and reproducing verbatim what was said, including some very immoderate remarks. The Report was not aiming to offer a judgement or evaluation "on the cathedral" as such, but to record what a wide variety of cathedral and other people said "about the cathedral". Eleri didn't really do any objective evaluation of what she heard, but gathered it together in such a way that the Recommendations emerged from what people said they wanted: ie their ambitions and aspirations. She also deliberately didn't apply any editorial control, in terms of balancing one area of interest against another - and as Dean Janet
Llandaff Pewsternoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4019954714374602353.post-78458832172662060542015-08-25T22:40:56.043+01:002015-08-25T22:40:56.043+01:00Page 6

For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus' sake. For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
Reader 2
4.7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.
Reader 3
4.13 But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture "I believed, and so I spoke"-we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence ........
So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.
Reader 4
5.6 So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord -for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.Llandaff Pewsternoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4019954714374602353.post-9757928091271244252015-08-25T20:25:21.199+01:002015-08-25T20:25:21.199+01:00"Our challenge is to ensure that the operatio..."Our challenge is to ensure that the operation of the Cathedral keeps in line with its income – that is true for any Cathedral or institution."

That's always been true so why is the glove puppet still running the Cathedral at an annual £30k deficit?

"The Friends cannot deploy that money in any way other than for the benefit of the Cathedral and we are urging them to do just that."

Precisely.
